Microsoft shows off new controller, with transforming D-pad

The D-pad on the existing 360 controllers is, to put it mildly, utter garbage. If you want to play any games relying on precise movements, such as fighting games, buying a third-party controller is a requirement. Microsoft hopes it has this problem licked, however, and is releasing a controller with a new, updated D-pad on November 9

If you want to play any games relying on precise movements, such as fighting games, buying a third-party controller is a requirement. Microsoft hopes it has this problem licked, however, and is releasing a controller with a new, updated D-pad on November 9. The catch? You won’t be able to buy the controller…

Guess which one didn’t get to walk on the moon?

submitted by SeymourLevov to science [link] [11 comments]

…Aldrin and Armstrong were at most 50 feet away from the nearest human (each other) as were the other moonwalkers and the non-Mercury Project orbiters (for the US, anyway). Only the solo flyers count.

9 Scott Pilgrim References That You’ve Probably Seen

The appeal behind the Scott Pilgrim comic and film adaptation owes a great amount to its homage to video games. There’s something about seeing a reference that only the gaming culture would get that tickles our souls

…The appeal behind the Scott Pilgrim comic and film adaptation owes a great amount to its homage to video games. There’s something about seeing a reference that only the gaming culture would get that tickles our souls. In celebration of Pilgrim’s big screen debut, we list off some of the references to other works in both the comic and movie. As always, if there’s any that we missed, feel more than free to point it out to us in the comments section.
Super Mario

The most apparent reference to the video game that started all video games takes shape in the name of Scott’s band. Bob-omb’s were enemies that would detonate over an extended period of time. Like Super Mario, Scott always has an extra life handy.
The Legend of Zelda

The opening theme chimes in briefly at the beginning of the movie and you can hear Young Neil playing the game frequently from his Nintendo DS.
Capcom

Fighting game references abound during the battles between Scott and Romona’s League of Evil Exes. The powers Scott and his opponents…

What Your Gamertag Says About You [Chart]

Your gamertag is your online identity, which of course is more important than your actual identity since you probably meet way more people online than you do on your rare visits outside.

…despite being the pinnacle of the human race’s advancement the internet is a backwards place. On the internet, the international human rights movement never happened, people are immediately judged and abused for arbitrary reasons, and all the women are too busy travelling between the bedroom and the kitchen to play games. That being said, the people at the lowest rungs of the real-world social ladder are at the top when it comes to the world of online gaming. So, you would do well to masquerade as one of them.
Here is an example using the authors own name:
Karl Smallwood
This would make a terrible gamertag. Hell, it’s even a terrible name (no teenager can resist making the link between smallwood and small penis). So let’s add a terrible pun in there and see how it looks:
Karl BigWood
That’s looking a little better, although that’s like saying being mugged is better than being stabbed. Lets get rid of that first name since you would have to be an idiot to let people on the internet know your real…

Gaming for a cure: Computer gamers tackle protein folding

The University of Washington two years ago launched an ambitious project harnessing the brainpower of computer gamers to solve medical problems. Results published this week in the journal Nature show more than 55,000 players have played protein-folding Tetris, and beat the world’s most powerful computers on solving problems

…Biochemists and computer scientists at the University of Washington two years ago launched an ambitious project harnessing the brainpower of computer gamers to solve medical problems.
The game, Foldit, turns one of the hardest problems in molecular biology into a game a bit reminiscent of Tetris. Thousands of people have now played a game that asks them to fold a protein rather than stack colored blocks or rescue a princess.
Results published Thursday (Aug. 5) in the journal Nature show that Foldit is a success. It turns out that people can, indeed, compete with supercomputers in this arena. Analysis shows that players bested the computers on problems that required radical moves, risks and long-term vision — the kinds of qualities that computers do not possess.
“People in the scientific community have known about Foldit for a while, and everybody thought it was a great idea, but the really fundamental question in most scientists’ minds was ‘What can it produce in terms of results? Is there any evidence…

Everything you need to know about Starcraft II

On July 27, Blizzard Entertainment will release Starcraft II, the sequel to the real-time strategy game so popular that it’s still the gold standard of the genre 12 years later.

…On July 27, Blizzard Entertainment will release Starcraft II, the sequel to the real-time strategy game so popular that it’s still the gold standard of the genre 12 years later. Today, we’ll be looking at Starcraft as a scifi narrative.
Starcraft is military science fiction that focuses on three warring species: the power-armor-clad Terrans, the monstrous bio-engineered Zerg, and the technologically advanced Protoss. Starcraft’s first (and most obvious) narrative antecedent is Starship Troopers. It’s almost impossible to write military science fiction that escapes the shadow of Heinlein’s classic novel, and the debt here is mostly to the novel’s aesthetics.
The Terrans of Starcraft may wear power armor, but their culture and history is a far cry from the Terran Federation of Heinlein’s novel. These Terrans are hard-drinking, hard-fighting descendants of criminals and other undesirables that Earth shot off into space. Besides some typical shady government stuff (like experimenting on their own citizens to…

NASA-funded game aims to make science more appealing

With the release of Moonbase Alpha, NASA has taken its first steps into the world of gaming. Ars speaks with the project manager of NASA’s Learning Technologies program to learn more about the game and the organization’s future plans, which include a MMO.

…In addition to funding the game, NASA also had a hand in ensuring that it was as accurate as possible, going so far as to have several engineers and scientists review the game for accuracy. Meanwhile, all of the models for the structures, vehicles and space suits were based on NASA’s lunar architecture plans.

The game itself only takes around 20 minutes to play, and despite its sophisticated 3D visuals the game utilizes Unreal Engine 3 Moonbase Alpha is really just a proof of concept. NASA has another, much more ambitious project in the works: an MMO tentatively titled Astronaut: Moon, Mars and Beyond.

And, according to Laughlin, the success of Moonbase Alpha could have a big affect on the development of the MMO.

“Summaries of the player feedback from Moonbase Alpha will be going to the design team for Astronaut: Moon, Mars and Beyond,” he told Ars. “Even more importantly, Moonbase Alpha has the potential to make or break the MMO project. A big negative reaction would mean revisiting the rationale for the…
