Top 5 Games That Will Scare the Shit out of You

There have been some truly brilliant horror games released over the years, and coming up with a definitive Top 5 of the ‘scariest’ was always going to be a tall order. However, after much pondering and re-living of virtual nightmares, I present to you my in-no-way-scientifically-determined selection of the games which have most haunted your sleep.

…Doom 3 is on this list? I mean, maybe you jump the first couple of times a monster pops out, but once you figure out it’s going to happen every time you touch a medkit, it gets very old. Also, most of its supposedly terrifying moments rely on the protagonist being unable to hold a pistol in one hand and a flashlight in the other. If this scared you, you were in the minority. Everyone else just thought it was stupid, and a transparently artificial means to try, and largely fail, to induce tension in an otherwise dull first person shooter.
Why isn’t FEAR on this list, with its genuinely creepy moments that didn’t rely on the ancient and worn out mechanic of monster boxes? Or STALKER, with its crumbling cities and roving mutant dogs with frighteningly realistic pack behaviors? In addition to these, Resident Evil 4, AVP2, and Clive Barker’s Undying are all scarier than anything on this list….

Xbox 360 Ad Banned for Using Higher Resolution PS3 Footage

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has found that Square-Enix, the makers of the popular sci-fi game Final Fantasy XIII had misled video gamers by not using images from the Xbox 360 but from its arch rival, the PlayStation 3.

…In their defence, Square Enix said that the ad did not feature game play footage of images derived from a particular console, but rather contained full motion video (FMV) cut scenes . They have however admitted that the images used were from the Sony PlayStation to allow advertisers to capture the FMV footage for the advert .
Experts have warned that the ruling which declares that PS3 games have a higher quality than Xbox titles could have a major impact on the multi-million pound gaming industry.

Immersion 101: Music and Sound

Great games generally have similar elements in common; a unique tone, a richly detailed setting, strong writing, memorable characters, the list goes on.

…s noticeably bad, it can be turned off, or turned down. But when games get it right, when the music is interspersed with the game in just the right ways, it can turn a game toward true greatness.
The first time I noticed spectacular music was way back in 2002, when Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was one of the few World War II games on the market (remember when they were original?). Not only did it have the now flagrantly overused Normandy Invasion as one of its high points, it also had future Up composer and Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino in charge of the music. Though his soundtrack fairly straightforward, predictably piping in with its sweeping, enervated score when the bullets were thickest, the effect was tremendous. You wanted to charge up the hill when the music kicked in, and the music moved you just as much, if not more, than the level design did. It was at its best in those frenetic moments when…
