Check Your iPhone 4’s Antenna Reception With Field Test Mode In iOS 4.1

Now you can put your iPhone into field test mode, which will allow to easily and precisely test your cell signal reception quality.

…into your phone.
Done. The signal bars will be replaced with a number (like -85). The more negative the number, the worse the signal is. Example: -110 is worse than -85. Once activated, you can switch between signal bars and number by touching on the number.
Try the test mode now. Then use a finger to connect the two metal bands on the lower left corner, over the black plastic strip. That will short-circuit the magical gap and bring the phone’s signal down quite significantly.
To get out of the field test mode, just hit the home button….

Americans Confused By Smart Grid, Want it Anyway

Despite not fully understanding what the smart grid is, a recent survey found the majority of Americans actually support it.

…loss to due heat dissipation (this varies).
It also means other things, like new power management systems for the power plant managers who are constantly gaging power usage throughout the country and making adjustments. A “smarter” grid would help that person behind the desk who flicks the switch make faster and more accurate decisions about when and how much power to move to X area of the country.
Furthermore, it can be smaller things as well, like a better power meter that can be hooked into your house line enabling you to understand your usage in a more helpful way, allowing you to adjust your consumption accordingly (if you wish), instead of just looking at the black arm on your meter go in circles and have no idea what it means. Another example would be a device that you connect to your fridge to reduce the power given to it in times of low usage - like at night. The one example you mentioned about the dish washer is the same kind of thing, except, from what I’ve learned you would never be restricted…

Video: Kevin Rose talks about the New Digg V4 on DiggNation TV | hewreck

First, this Diggnation Response was a Bad move in my opinion.

…First, this Diggnation Response video was not the best move in my opinion. Kevin doesn’t seem to realize that it’s not all about the bugs and Fail Ox issues as he talks about in this video. The problem with new Digg is You can’t ignore the core user base that put Digg in the great position it was in a few weeks ago.
I think most Digg users like myself expected the new Digg to be an expansion upon what it already was and what made it good with room for the mainstream and for Digg to grow, not something new entirely.
People like Leo Laporte weren’t interested in Digg because they wanted to know what their friends like, not the developed community of Digg. The new Digg should’ve had room for the loyal Diggers AND the Leo Laportes. Instead he threw out Digg and made something entirely for the Leo’s and the so called mainstream . Will this new target market, if they even find and care about Digg at all, make it as much of a success as the old community did? I guess we have to wait and see. It just comes down to…

Giz Explains: Why Everything Wireless is 2.4GHz

You live your life at 2.4GHz. Your router, your cordless phone, your Bluetooth earpiece, your baby monitor and your garage opener all love and live on this radio frequency, and no others. Why?

…2,399,999,999 whole number frequencies below it, or any number above it. It seems almost controlled, or guided. It seems, maybe, a bit arbitrary. It seems, well, regulated.
A glance at FCC regulations confirms any suspicions. A band of frequencies clustered around 2.4GHz has been designated, along with a handful of others, as the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical radio bands. “A lot of the unlicensed stuff for example Wi-Fi is on the 2.4GHz or the 900Mhz frequencies the ISM bands. You don’t need a license to operate on them.” That’s Ira Kelpz, Deputy Chief, Office of Engineering and Technology at the Federal Communications Commission, explaining precisely why these ISM bands are attractive to gadget makers: They’re free to use. If routers and cordless phones and whatever else are relegated to a small band 2.4GHz, then their radio waves won’t interfere with, say, cellphones operating at 1.9GHz, or AM radio, which broadcasts between 535 kHz and 1.7 MHz. The ISM is, in effect, a ghetto for unlicensed wireless…

Microsoft shows off new controller, with transforming D-pad

The D-pad on the existing 360 controllers is, to put it mildly, utter garbage. If you want to play any games relying on precise movements, such as fighting games, buying a third-party controller is a requirement. Microsoft hopes it has this problem licked, however, and is releasing a controller with a new, updated D-pad on November 9

…of the apps on the app store being junk, I’d agree with you. They should make a trial api so people can run an app once to check it out (for those devs that don’t make a lite version). I buy many apps and more than once I’ve been screwed by apps that crash every 5 seconds and apps that don’t have all the listed features.

A consumer has up to 24 hrs to uninstall the app and get a refund. Does Apple not allow any such trial period? No, I don’t own an iPhone.

It’s in the context of a religious ruling, it involves corporeal punishment. It is not in the context of a porn movie, and I imagine you do realize the difference.

Custom Droid X ROMs starting to break loose, eFuse be damned

Despite Motorola’s best intentions to the contrary, the Droid X has been making steady progress toward viable custom ROMs, first with root access, then with a recovery method… and now, at long last, we’re starting to get the first few glimpses at legit cooked firmware.

…Despite Motorola’s best intentions to the contrary, the Droid X has been making steady progress toward viable custom ROMs, first with root access, then with a recovery method… and now, at long last, we’re starting to get the first few glimpses at legit cooked firmware. The two options we’re seeing so far are Sapphire — originally designed for the Droid of old — and a so-called “FlyX” ROM from longtime contributor Birdman. In both cases, the benefits of eschewing Motorola’s standard builds are pretty obvious: you get Froyo, root, and a host of apps and capabilities preferred by the superuser crowd like surcharge-free mobile hotspot access. The process is a little involved to get these bad boys installed at this point, but with time, we’re willing to bet it becomes a pretty painless endeavor. Follow the break for a quick video of Sapphire booting into stock Froyo on the X — a tantalizing sight, indeed….
