70% of Teen Girls Play PSP Compared to 44% of Teen Boys

M2 research published a study today that breaks down gaming demographics among teens. Some interesting factoids include teen girls’ preference for PSP and the staggering statistic that 90 percent of tweens play games online.

…The breakdown of age gaps and gender splits in video game preferences is more interesting. For example, Facebook is really only king for boys when they’re between the ages of 8 and 11 and king for girls only between the ages of 12 and 15. There’s also a “sweet spot” for online gaming that hits both genders right between ages 8 and 11 — the study says 91 percent of tween boys and 93 percent of tween girls play their games online….

Blockbuster To Start Delivering Game Rentals By Mail

Game and movie rental chain Blockbuster Video has added the ability to rent games by mail to its ‘Blockbuster By Mail’ program, allowing customers to request games alongside movies without incurring any extra cost.

…With Netflix diversifying its service to allow customers to watch movies on their video game console of choice, Blockbuster Video is trying a different tactic to reach out to fans who enjoy movies and games. The company announced today that a library of over 3,000 games for Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii are now available to rent by mail, and the ability to do so has been added to the company’s ‘Blockbuster By Mail’ service.
According to the announcement, and as reflected on the service sign-up page, the ability to rent games will not increase the price of any current plans. Customers will be allowed to have any combination of discs sent to them, though one caveat separates the treatment Blockbuster is bestowing upon the two different forms of media. Customers who utilize the Total Access program –Blockbuster’s premium delivery service that allows customers to bring in mailed movies to exchange immediately in the brick-and-mortar stores — will not be able to perform the same action with video games,…

Academic Study Says Violent Video Games Reduces Stress

Texas A&M International University recently conducted a study in which volunteers were subjected to stress, with some subjects being allowed to play video games afterward. According to the results, the game-playing group reported less stress and depression afterward.

…M Associate Professor Christopher Ferguson concluded that violent video games could actually combat anger and depression. The method of measurement came by subjecting four groups of predominantly Hispanic students to a scientifically-proven stress-inducer called the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task. Afterward, two groups were given a violent game to play (Hitman: Blood Money or Call of Duty 2), one was given a non-violent game (Madden 2007) and a final group was told they wouldn’t be able to play any games due to a malfunction.
While Ferguson concluded that the game-playing groups exhibited less hostility and depression, the professor presented a caveat regarding the conclusion–that the uniqueness of the control groups could reveal different results with a larger and more diverse pool of subjects. To learn more about the study, check out the source links below. The full study will be found in volume 15 of the “European Psychologist” journal….

…2:00-3:00 Radical Publishing Panel
What they’re talking about: A bunch of famous and semi-famous storytellers from comic books, movies, and video games get together for “special announcements” and a raffle.
Why we care: Keith Arem of Call of Duty and the upcoming Exile is one of the panelists. Could be one of those “special announcements” pertains to his work. Also, this whole transmedia thing is picking up speed — so even if it’s not a game, the likelihood of something on this panel being game-related is pretty high….
