The Rise of the Anti-Facebooks

Facebook is dominating social media in almost every country where it hasn’t been banned, and the six-year old site shows no signs of slowing down. It’s creeping across generations, replacing things like the phone book and introducing tools the masses had no idea they needed.

…Maybe age or school-affiliation isn’t important, but exclusiveness still is. ASMALLWORLD is an invitation-only social network for “sophisticated” and “influential” people. “Trusted and loyal ASW members who meet certain criteria have the privilege of inviting a limited number of their friends to the network. If you know someone with this privilege, you can ask them to invite you. If not, please be patient and continue to ask around in your own personal and professional circles,” the site says.

Multiple personalities

Facebook does let you target what you upload to specific friends. But Facebook doesn’t want you to splinter your identity. Throughout its history, Facebook has encouraged users to use their real names, upload their real birthdays and use their real identities to log on to other sites.

Hibe is a yet-to-launch social network based around controlling which personality you project to whom, a concept its creator calls “Social Web 3.0.” “We are opening the way for a new social networking experience…

Cartoon: So Sue Me

If you own a big tech firm, you aren’t Microsoft, and you weren’t named in the patent lawsuit filed this week by Paul Allen’s Interval Licensing, well… you’re probably looking deep into your soul today and asking where it all went wrong. If you aren’t a defendant - which includes AOL, Apple, eBay, Facebook, Google and Yahoo! - why not

…Craig, click on the legal status tab for something perhaps even more intriguing: if I’m reading it correctly, that patent appears to be collateral, put up by AOL and currently held by the Bank of America. (Bear in mind that I have precisely zero legal expertise in this area. In fact, I have what I would describe as negative legal expertise: I am capable of reducing the net legal knowledge of a room simply by walking into it. It’s my admittedly meh superpower.)

Doug, that’s an interesting but unintended read of the first one-third of the sentence. (Anyone else reach the same conclusion?) If you grasp the nettle, steel your nerves and follow the sentence all the way to the end, though, then:

1) you should be sure to rehydrate after the long journey (my old J-school profs would flay me for writing such a lengthy lead), and

2) you’ll probably realize that these are three conditions followed by a conclusion: if (a) and (b) and (c) then (d). You apparently read it instead as “If (a) then (b) and (c), and Error:…

5 Ways Tech Startups Can Disrupt the Education System

“Revolutionary.” “Disruptive.” These terms are used with such frequency that they may have lost much of their meaning. That’s not to say that there aren’t plenty of products and services that are innovative, and plenty of systems, plenty of organizations that are ripe for disruption or “revolution.” Take education, for example. Our modern education system is, after all, not so modern, with many of its practices strongly rooted in a “factory” model circa the Industrial Revolution.

…Is it based on profitability? Scale? Test scores? Overthrowing old theory and pedagogy? Overthrowing established companies in the industry? And as one of the companies on the Teaching Mater list was founded in 1999, I feel I have to ask again, what’s the definition of “startup”? (And I should note here that this doesn’t mean established tech companies are not doing innovative things or that educators aren’t using older tools in the classroom in innovative ways.)

In preparing to write several back-to-school stories for ReadWriteWeb, I initially considered a post featuring some of these “interesting” and “revolutionary” ed-tech startups. But instead of another list of disruptive ed-tech startups, I’d like to offer a list of the 5 disruptive things ed-tech startups are doing. I would love to hear your thoughts - as educators, as entrepreneurs - on what other metrics you might use for evaluating this disruption. After all, if as Bill Gates suggests that in five years the best education will come from the web,…

The 10 Most Overblown Video Game Controversies

So-called “responsible” adults have always tried to find scapegoats for bad behavior since the dawn of time. These days, video games take the most heat, even though some controversies just aren’t very well thought out.

…Source: Atari

Turning a villain into the hero of a video game was unheard of in the days of the Atari 2600. So when horror movie auteur Charles Band got his bloody hands in the video game market, he caused a bigger stink than your Dad in the bathroom on Thanksgiving.

He turned the classic slasher masterpiece The Texas Chainsaw Massacre into a grind-’em-up game that puts the player behind the human skin mask of Leatherface and lets them chase down innocents with a gear-grinding chainsaw for points. Stores either refused to stock the game or hid it behind the counter where only adults could purchase it.

The concept of the game may have sounded violent, but the rest was far from bloody. Thanks to the limited graphics and extremely crude sounds, Leatherface just looked like a walking Jack-o-Lantern with a hot dog shaped tumor sticking out of his gut. So really, the only people who had a right to be offended by it were people with encephalitis or victims of kielbasa impalement….

70% of Teen Girls Play PSP Compared to 44% of Teen Boys

M2 research published a study today that breaks down gaming demographics among teens. Some interesting factoids include teen girls’ preference for PSP and the staggering statistic that 90 percent of tweens play games online.

…The breakdown of age gaps and gender splits in video game preferences is more interesting. For example, Facebook is really only king for boys when they’re between the ages of 8 and 11 and king for girls only between the ages of 12 and 15. There’s also a “sweet spot” for online gaming that hits both genders right between ages 8 and 11 — the study says 91 percent of tween boys and 93 percent of tween girls play their games online….

DRM vs. No DRM (pic)

…You work and sell Games and not the freaking DVD! If I buy 1 licence for a game you build I will install it and if you have to know that it is installed gime a freaking activation procedure.
If my computer breaks because of catastrophic hardware failure what then? Should I buy another copy of the game? I already payed for my freaking license!
Control is needed but when I buy your digital product I do not want to bond with your freaking DVD!
Just give me a download and activation and let me figure out the rest!…
