Snoop Dogg is Blowin’ Up An Armored Truck For Zynga

In what may or may not be a highly questionable business decision, the social-gaming powerhouse is detonating one heck of a publicity stunt in the Las Vegas desert to promote its Mafia Wars title.

…Seriously?
(Credit:
Zynga)

Social-gaming powerhouse Zynga launched its latest game, “Mafia Wars: Las Vegas” earlier this month, and it promised eager players that when the game hit 10 million users, it would celebrate by detonating an armored truck in the Vegas-area desert and live-stream the whole thing on the Web. Yes, really.
Well, the milestone has been hit, according to a release on Thursday, and Zynga has made good on its promise to blow up the truck. Oh, except there’s an addition: the truck will be blown up with the help of rapper Snoop Dogg, whose name I will never be able to hear again without thinking immediately of the performer being addressed as “Snoop! Snoop-a-loop!” by Will Ferrell’s “Frank the Tank” character in “Old School.” The act will be performed at 6 p.m. PDT on Thursday, streamed live on the Mafia Wars Las Vegas site.
Considering that Snoop Dogg’s most recent high-profile appearance has involved him getting sprayed in the face with the ammunition from a whipped-cream brassiere in…

BioShock Infinite - What We Want To See

What we’ve seen of BioShock Infinite so far promises to do things with the series that have never been done before. As impressed as we are, we still know relatively little about the game

…Shifting levels

A city in the sky opens up all sorts of possibilities that simply didn’t exist in Rapture. Although it was founded to foster absolute freedom, the irony of Rapture was its absolute confinement. You were at the bottom of the ocean, with only Rapture’s prisonlike walls to protect you from cold, liquid death. (That was less true in BioShock 2, but the point of confinement still stands.) Escape wasn’t possible. Traveling beyond the walls eventually was, but only in a very limited sense. And everything was cemented in place where it stood, a pressurized bulwark against the elements.

Above: Freedom? Hardly

Columbia, meanwhile, has the potential to be a much more open environment. Sure, it’s still a hostile one the place is thousands of feet off the ground, and a fall from any of its buildings could mean certain death. But the sky’s literally the limit here. The demo has already shown us that it’s possible to manipulate the environment (which Booker and Elizabeth do by working together to tear…

Xbox 360 Ad Banned for Using Higher Resolution PS3 Footage

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has found that Square-Enix, the makers of the popular sci-fi game Final Fantasy XIII had misled video gamers by not using images from the Xbox 360 but from its arch rival, the PlayStation 3.

…In their defence, Square Enix said that the ad did not feature game play footage of images derived from a particular console, but rather contained full motion video (FMV) cut scenes . They have however admitted that the images used were from the Sony PlayStation to allow advertisers to capture the FMV footage for the advert .
Experts have warned that the ruling which declares that PS3 games have a higher quality than Xbox titles could have a major impact on the multi-million pound gaming industry.

The Top 7… Best launch games of all time

Nothing cures buyer’s remorse like a system-defining game on day one

…Accurately described as Tetris in a disco shirt, Lumines took the dead-simple gameplay of a block-breaking puzzle game and slathered it in enough neon lights to make it visible from space. Granted, the guts were more or less like any other puzzler (clear blocks before they pile up), but the flashy presentation and genius use of reactive dance music made it feel far cooler than any Tetris clone we’d played before. As the video illustrates, the music wasn’t just there to bore its way into your brain. Each time you clear a chunk of blocks there’s an added layer of aural pleasure, with various dings and beeps signifying your continued success.

Above: Pure bliss

This combination of club-quality music, dazzling visuals and habit-forming gameplay was impossible on any prior handheld, making this the ideal launch title for a new portable system, more so than any other PSP game on the shelf that day (Wipeout and Twisted Metal were great, but they were still shrunken-down console games). Lumines was a clever,…

One Gamer’s Darker Competitive Side

The article explores one gamer’s darker competitive nature throughout the years in competitive games like Counter-Strike, StarCraft II and World of Warcraft, telling a story that almost every hardcore gamer can relate to.

…completions or insanity runs. When I beat Mass Effect 2, I played it on normal difficulty and didn’t think twice. I knew if I started down the insane difficulty path, I would have had a lot less fun with the overall storyline and immersion the title provided. A couple months ago, I started playing Super Street Fighter IV and I made sure I didn’t go overboard. While I researched some moves for Chun-Li and made sure I had some good counters, I purposely avoided online play. I knew the beast within me wouldn’t be sated if she ever got started and I didn’t want to be forced to shell out money for a gamepad. I’ve also made sure that while I play Team Fortress 2 well, I never join a clan. I know if I actually started to get competitive, it wouldn’t be enough to just have a nice kill to death ratio or to help defend a capture point. I would have to have it all. I wouldn’t stop until I was playing the best I could possibly play at every class even classes I hate, like the Scout. For now I’m content shrugging it off…

Celebrities morphed into game characters

We blend famous faces together to hilarious (and horrendous) effect

…Who should play Nathan Drake? What actress looks most like Alyx Vance? Can any movie star pull off the intensity and insanity necessary for a Kratos or a Lynch?

Speculate no longer! I’ve discovered a fast and easy way to cast every hero from every game. Here’s the trick: Instead of searching endlessly for that elusive, possibly unknown celebrity who perfectly resembles your favorite character, just use a face-morphing website to make ALL celebrities match ALL game characters.

What could possibly go wrong??

WARNING: Once seen, the following images cannot be forgotten. Proceed at your own mental risk!…

Top 10 FPS Games of all time

Countdown of the Top 10 fps Games that had a resonating impact on the Industry.

…This list cannot be complete without including Valve’s second iteration to the Half-Life series. Half-Life 2 which took close to 6 years in development was probably the most satisfying single player experience any fps enthusiast could dream of. The source engine, the gravity gun, amazing facial expression and simple yet clever gameplay mechanics that we expect from a Valve game were all present in one single game. From the story to every single gameplay element, anyone who buys this game just cannot be disappointed. The only good thing that can come out of having not played this game is that you don’t have to wait for Episode 3….

Amazing Demakes of Batman, Bayonetta, Bioshock & more (pics)

….

…Here are a bunch of demake mockups that I’ve made for swedish gaming mag Level over the last years. Many of these were made quick and dirty (relatively speaking) in order to make deadlines, so they’re not all that pretty to look at. But I figured I should post them somewhere so they don’t just gather dust on my hard drive….

9 Classic Sports Video Games We Loved As a Child

While it may sound corny, there was something very cool about finding a game where you got to be Wayne Gretzky or fight Mike Tyson.

…re good sports.
8. Super Mario Kart
Some games succeed in spite of their simplicity. Others, like Super Mario Kart, succeed because of it. Super Mario Kart was a straight forward racing game that featured the usual cast of characters from the Mario franchise, racing around on fantastic courses that were appealing to toddlers and stoned teenagers alike.
Perhaps the most advanced aspect of Mario Kart was the split-screen presentation that allowed two or four players to share the screen, all while maintain a first-person perspective while racing.
The best use of these split screen was during Battle Mode, in which players would compete in a closed-course arena, firing projectiles and dropping bombs to destroy one another. To this day, there is no better application in a video game than the ability to completely screw over your friends, then make fun of them for it. It may have been a game for little kids, but Super Mario Kart had that in spades.
9. NFL Blitz
If the Madden franchise is the Radiohead of football…
