Xbox 360 Ad Banned for Using Higher Resolution PS3 Footage

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has found that Square-Enix, the makers of the popular sci-fi game Final Fantasy XIII had misled video gamers by not using images from the Xbox 360 but from its arch rival, the PlayStation 3.

…In their defence, Square Enix said that the ad did not feature game play footage of images derived from a particular console, but rather contained full motion video (FMV) cut scenes . They have however admitted that the images used were from the Sony PlayStation to allow advertisers to capture the FMV footage for the advert .
Experts have warned that the ruling which declares that PS3 games have a higher quality than Xbox titles could have a major impact on the multi-million pound gaming industry.

What does ‘Video Game’ Mean, Anyway?

The biggest problem of all may be that there is no singular “games industry” to speak of anymore, and that the term “video game” itself is hopelessly outdated.

…Hobbies and Pastimes

Editor’s note: Scott Steinberg is the head of technology and video game consulting firm TechSavvy Global as well as the founder of GameExec magazine and Game Industry TV. The creator and host of online video series Game Theory, he frequently appears as an on-air technology analyst for ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and CNN. (CNN) — From plummeting sales to a shift to social networks, critics love to endlessly debate what ails the gaming business. But ironically, the biggest problem of all may be that there is no singular “games industry” to speak of anymore, and that the term “video game” itself is hopelessly outdated. “I’ve never seen a period like this … there’s so much disruption,” Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins recently said on the online video show “Game Theory.” “The industry is really being turned inside out.” Credit the rise of new technologies — from downloadable games to smartphone apps — streaming “cloud” games and social network titles. Vietnam Restricts Online Games After Murder Cases

Vietnam has banned the advertisement of online games and restricted access after several cases in which young people committed murder or robbery to get money to pay to play, an official said Thursday.

…The Ministry of Information and Communications’ decision to crack down on online games follows a public outcry about their negative influence on youngsters, said ministry official Luu Vu Hai.
The ministry has temporarily stopped licensing online games pending the government’s implementation of new regulations, banned their advertisement, and ordered Internet service providers to cut off Web access after 11 p.m to shops that offer games, he said.
Over the past year, Vietnam’s press has reported several murders and robbery cases committed by young people to get money to pay for online games. In one particularly shocking crime, a 15-year-old girl was sentenced to 10 years in prison for strangling a 4-year-old girl from her neighborhood to rob her of earrings worth $10 to pay for online games, state media reported.
Teenagers forming lines in online game shops is a common sight in the capital Hanoi - a city of 7 million people - where more than 3,000 such shops operate.
The government has licensed 22 gaming…

Do Video Games Equal Less Crime?

That’s one theory for the continuing fall in crime, despite the recession.

…but other prisoners would probably be committing crimes if they were free. Another factor is the spread of smart, data-driven police strategies.
Lawrence Katz, a labor economist, has an intriguing item to add to the list of potential causes: video games. When I spoke to him recently, he was very careful to say it was only an idea. He is far from sure that it’s correct. But, as The Economist put it, Larry Katz, a Harvard economist, suspects that video games and Web sites may have kept the young and idle busy during this recession, thus explaining the surprising lack of an uptick in crime.
Video games can not only provide hours of entertainment. They can also give people especially young men, who play more than their fair share of video games and commit more than their fair share of crimes an outlet for frustration that doesn’t involve actual violence. Video games obviously have many unfortunate side effects. They can promote obsessive, antisocial behavior and can make violent situations seem ordinary. But…

Four More Marvel vs Capcom 3 Characters Confirmed

Four more fan favorites join the Marvel vs Capcom 3 roster with Deadpool and Captain America From Marvel, and Dante and Felicia from Capcom.

…I REALLY never saw the big deal with deadpool, and I have been up on comics since around 1991. i’ve seen characters come and go, some good some not so good but I have never seen one as overly hyped for no reason a deadpool. I mean he’s a secondary character in the Marvel universe (yes, I know he’s been in some big stories) so why are so many people on here so big on him. It defies logic to me.
Lets put in some big names like Apocalypse, Sinister, DD, Ghost Rider, Human Torch, Thing, Pnisher, Carnage. Leave the B-listers for DLC or something….

South Korea Cracks Down on Video Gaming Addiction

Last week, Seoul announced new rules limiting playing time for certain video games as the nation battles a growing problem with video game addiction.

…of South Korean schoolchildren have shown signs of video-game addiction, thought by some psychiatrists to be one of the highest rates in the world, along with that of China. Video-game addiction though not officially recognized in the U.S. by the American Psychological Association typically includes symptoms like becoming withdrawn or angry when not allowed to play. Severe cases can result in addicts’ simply not eating or sleeping until they’re back on their binge. For years, South Korea has been at the forefront of treating the disorder. In 2002, before the issue had risen to global prominence, the government opened one of the region’s first Internet-addiction treatment centers, perched away in the countryside. Since then, hundreds of private hospitals and clinics in the country have opened specialized units to treat the disorder, and the government even opened a hotline for gaming addicts in 2006. At the treatment centers, patients typically spend two weeks or more detoxing from video games by partaking in…

‘RapeLay’ Video Game Goes Viral Amid Outrage

The game begins with a teenage girl on a subway platform. She notices you are looking at her and asks, “Can I help you with something?”

…Women’s Issues

Tokyo, Japan (CNN) — The game begins with a teenage girl on a subway platform. She notices you are looking at her and asks, “Can I help you with something?” That is when you, the player, can choose your method of assault. With the click of your mouse, you can grope her and lift her skirt. Then you can follow her aboard the train, assaulting her sister and her mother. As you continue to play, “friends” join in and in a series of graphic, interactive scenes, you can corner the women, rape them again and again. The game allows you to even impregnate a girl and urge her to have an abortion. The reason behind your assault, explains the game, is that the teenage girl has accused you of molesting her on the train. The motive is revenge. When does a video game go too far? It is little wonder that the game, titled RapeLay, sparked international outrage from women’s groups. Taina Bien-Aime helped yank the game off store shelves worldwide. “This was a game that had absolutely no place on the market,”…
