Xbox 360 Ad Banned for Using Higher Resolution PS3 Footage

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has found that Square-Enix, the makers of the popular sci-fi game Final Fantasy XIII had misled video gamers by not using images from the Xbox 360 but from its arch rival, the PlayStation 3.

…In their defence, Square Enix said that the ad did not feature game play footage of images derived from a particular console, but rather contained full motion video (FMV) cut scenes . They have however admitted that the images used were from the Sony PlayStation to allow advertisers to capture the FMV footage for the advert .
Experts have warned that the ruling which declares that PS3 games have a higher quality than Xbox titles could have a major impact on the multi-million pound gaming industry.

Best New Features and Improvements in Starcraft II

Here are the best changes and improvements made to the Starcraft series with this new title.

…The single player campaign of the first Starcraft was really straightforward. You’d complete a mission and then get flung to the next one. There were no branching paths and no real decisions to make. The sequel has changed all of this by adding some good ole RPG elements into the mix. You spend time between missions inside the ship of your protagonist, Jim Raynor. This serves as a hub of sorts, and allows you to complete a host of tasks. You can spend money to buy upgrades, which offer stat enhancements and other goodies. You can also bum around and complete small sidequests. Also, the game allows you to tackle many of the missions in whatever order you choose. These are welcome changes from the original’s obsession with all things linear….

15 Video Games You Don’t Want To Play Alone

From Resident Evil to F.E.A.R. there have been plenty of titles that were so scary they had us on the verge of a self-soiling

…Bioshock 2 drops tomorrow. And there may or may not be a couple of us at Complex HQ with reservations about playing it alone in a dark house. That first one? Splicers everywhere, creepy little girls with yellow eyes, a leaky decrepit underwater city, and a dentist who doesn’t know the first thing about personal space? Real talk, there could have even been a couple of spots when we had to pause it until our lady came home. Not that Bioshock is the first title (let alone the scariest) to give us the creeps. Nope, we’re not afraid to admit that we’re certified soft-batch when it comes to horror games. That doesn’t mean we don’t still play them, though.
From Resident Evil to F.E.A.R. there have been plenty of titles that had us on the verge of a self-soiling. So the night before you head back to Rapture, take a trip down memory lane with some of these games. Just remember to turn down the volume, turn on the lights, and have your mommy ready on speed dial

TITLE: Alone in the Dark (1993)
CONSOLE(S): PC

Are Video Games the Next Great Art Form?

Developers are pushing the limits of storytelling, interactivity and design in games. Over the past three decades, they’ve gone from a geeky and often-ridiculed, kid-centric pastime to a cultural juggernaut with a massive adult consumer base

…”Portal,” for example, is a game, more than any other game that I’ve played that took pains to disguise the tension between narrative and gameplay and actually incorporate it into the game. In the game you wake up — you’re a woman — and you’re in a laboratory and you don’t know why you’re there. You have a gun, which is actually a portal gun, not a weapon. You shoot it at the wall and a hole opens up in this wall and if you walk through that wall, you come out of the room on the other side. So it seems like a pretty simple mechanic but as the game gets more elaborate these spatial puzzles become weirder. Throughout the game, there’s a voice that tells you what to do, which, you slowly realize is your enemy. It’s really creepy. From start to finish it’s this riveting game where you get the antiseptic beauty of this strange, spare laboratory world, the physics fun of playing around with this really interesting mechanic, and the encroaching dread of this antagonist. It’s great, and it’s really an experience…

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II First Look [w/ vid]

LucasArts debuted the first look at the next installment of the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed series at E3.

…t played the original but intend to, skip over the next paragraph. The game picks up shortly after the original ends, and you again play as Starkiller. Which is slightly confusing at first, since he died at the end of the prequel. Vader makes his entrance, and tells Starkiller that he is a clone, and a crappy one at that. A handful of stormtroopers enter, weapons drawn, ready to kill Starkiller. Poor dumb, bastards.Several painful Imperial deaths later, the game begins, and you find that you are on Kamino, the planet of clone builders from Attack of the Clones. The first thing we saw in the demo that LucasArts reps played for us, was that the game looks jaw droppingly cool. It was like a dream that nerds used to awkwardly wake up from when their Mom knocked on the door to get them ready for school. In short, the graphics are good.As with the previous game, it again seems that there has been a heavy emphasis on story and cinema, and that is reinforced as Starkiller begins the demo by falling down the length of…

10 Dumbest Moments in Video Game History

The video game industry is relatively young, so unfortunately that means it’s also relatively dumb.

…But Nintendo fanboys can’t forget one very important fact: Yamauchi was not the only dumbass at Nintendo’s camp back in the day. Whether it be Iwata’s belief that Gamers don’t want online gaming or Reggie Fils Aime’s claim that Nintendo would win over the Halo audience, Nintendo is filled with people just waiting to say stupid things. They have a wait-list in their PR office for it. But past quotable moments, Nintendo can also be pretty dumb when it really counts. During the late 80s, Nintendo got into more legal trouble than they had bargained for. Most notably, New York State sued the Big N for holding a monopoly over the gaming market in 1991, which caused Nintendo to give a $5.00 rebate to all of their NES customers. Not only did Nintendo not quite understand American capitalism, they also had terrible counseling on the American judicial system.
3. The Saturnday surprise takes a turn off a cliff.

Steve says: Oh, Sega. That must have been some really sweet blow your mother snorted while you were in the…

A Brief History of Open World Gaming

The PS2 era gave us a lot of things; a competitor to rival Nintendo that they haven’t stomped into the ground yet, and a return to the 3 console competition we hadn’t seen since the 16-bit era. But probably one of the most influential things it gave us was “Grand Theft Auto III”.

…cheap DVD players, a competitor to rival Nintendo that they haven’t stomped into the ground yet, and a return to the three console competition we hadn’t seen since the 16-bit era. But probably one of the most influential things it gave us was Grand Theft Auto III . And no, not because you could pay a hooker to regenerate your health or run over pedestrians. We could already do that.
No, it was the open world. Before, gaming had largely been limited to a linear path, but now, now we could explore and buy prostitutes on our own time, or take a tank down Fifth Avenue blowing up cop cars like we’d always dreamed. After GTA III , sandbox gaming not only became popular, it practically became the standard. Every game has a huge, open world now for you to explore and usually to stab things or blow things up, because, let’s face it, that’s still what games do best.
But believe it or not, GTA wasn’t the first to let you poke around without exploiting a glitch. Gamers have been exploring diverse game worlds and blowing…
