The 10 Most Overblown Video Game Controversies

So-called “responsible” adults have always tried to find scapegoats for bad behavior since the dawn of time. These days, video games take the most heat, even though some controversies just aren’t very well thought out.

…Source: Atari

Turning a villain into the hero of a video game was unheard of in the days of the Atari 2600. So when horror movie auteur Charles Band got his bloody hands in the video game market, he caused a bigger stink than your Dad in the bathroom on Thanksgiving.

He turned the classic slasher masterpiece The Texas Chainsaw Massacre into a grind-’em-up game that puts the player behind the human skin mask of Leatherface and lets them chase down innocents with a gear-grinding chainsaw for points. Stores either refused to stock the game or hid it behind the counter where only adults could purchase it.

The concept of the game may have sounded violent, but the rest was far from bloody. Thanks to the limited graphics and extremely crude sounds, Leatherface just looked like a walking Jack-o-Lantern with a hot dog shaped tumor sticking out of his gut. So really, the only people who had a right to be offended by it were people with encephalitis or victims of kielbasa impalement….

The 1980s: The Decade of Epic Video Game Commercials

Though the old commercials from this era of video gaming are filled with cheesy lines, dated graphics and old fashion styles, they’ll undoubtedly make you at least a bit nostalgic for the days of blowing into your game cartridge to make it work.

…Yet the gamers of today haven’t forgotten the classic video games of the past and many are looking back with nostalgia upon the old sound effects and boxy graphics from the years of Atari and Nintendo NES. Though the old commercials from this era of video gaming are filled with cheesy lines, dated graphics and old fashion styles, they’ll undoubtedly make you at least a bit nostalgic for the days of blowing into your game cartridge to make it work.
Iron Sword

Iron Sword was an action/adventure game for the Nintendo NES. Players played as Kuros, a mighty warrior who must defend the world against the evil wizard Malkil, laying waste to random cronies and dangerous creatures along the way to success. The commercial above is extremely underwhelming, as the actual game looks so much less exciting than what is apparently going on outside the poor kid’s bedroom door.
Pole Position

Released for the Atari in 1982, Pole Position was an early attempt at a somewhat 3D formula one racing game. This game is often…

Zombies Return to Call of Duty

Best Buy has let the undead cat out of the bag by revealing that Treyarch will be bringing the wildly popular zombie mode to its Call of Duty: World at War follow up, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

…I’m sure Treyarch/Activision would’ve wanted to announce this in some spectacular fashion, but because they wanted to get a high level of consistent news throughout the pre-release period, they sat on the announcement. And this is what you get when you do that. They should have told us about this months ago, because if they just recently became sure it’s going to happen, it’s going to suck….

Will Portal 2 Scare Off Casual Gamers?

It came as no surprise that something as good as Portal appealed not only to a hardcore audience, but also casual gamers. The wait for Portal 2 is getting shorter, but as more information is revealed one thing keeps coming up: is Portal 2 going to be too hard? Will it scare off the casual fans Portal was able to pick up?

…is getting shorter and shorter, but as more information is revealed about the game one thing keeps crossing my mind: is Portal 2 going to be too hard? Will it scare off the casual fans Portal was able to pick up?

For some people, Portal served as their introduction into the era of modern gaming. It offered an easy transition by giving players who hadn t picked up a controller since the NES the chance to learn how to use dual-analogue sticks and offered visceral rewards for outsmarting the puzzles without a bunch of rummaging and collecting. You could explore as much or as little as you wanted in Portal and that appealed to people without a ton of prior videogame…

The 10 Most Blatant Video Game Character Rip-Offs

The Michael Jackson lookalike that got removed from Plants Vs. Zombies is just the latest in a long line of characters inspired by real people.

…Wednesday, August 4th, 2010
Last week, the tireless lawyer corps dispatched by the estate of Michael Jackson forced developer PopCap to remove the dancing zombie in its much-loved tower defense game Plants Vs. Zombies, complaining that it bore too strong a likeness to the deceased pop legend. Well, boo hoo. But PopCap was cool about it, replacing the character with a disco-themed zombie that is hilarious because looks like Disco Stu and an undead Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords produced a lovechild. We don’t mind the change, but we also know that it’s common practice for video game characters to draw inspiration from or coincidentally resemble real-life personalities or well-known movie characters. Believe us, it didn’t start with Dancing Zombie, and it won’t end there either. So take a look back at 10 of our favorites

SOLID SNAKE/BIG BOSS, METAL GEAR SOLID
Who They’re Based On: Snake Plissken, Kurt Russell’s character in Escape From New York

8 Ways To Improve ‘Red Dead Redemption’

After much deliberation, here are 8 ways to improve the nearly perfect Red Dead Redemption.

…Red Dead Redemption has been out for a few months now, and what a glorious time it’s been. According to statistics, I’ve harvested over 120,000 pounds of meat. In between slaying every animal (and every human) in sight, and burning peasant villages to the ground, I wondered about how could I make this game better. So, after much deliberation, here are 8 ways to improve a nearly perfect game.
8. More Buffalo

Within one hour after unlocking the Great Plains, I had killed every last buffalo receiving the dreaded Manifest Destiny achievement. This of course makes no sense considering, there are still buffalo walking around today. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to teach us a lesson (Rockstar really shouldn’t be handing out lessons) or be cute, but either way, it’s dumb. Shooting Buffalo is fun and quite frankly, American.
7. Tighten Up the Controls
Anyone who has played a considerable amount of time on Red Dead Redemption has probably had one of those special moments only video games can produce. The player…
