Hellmode talks about how video games are art. It’s been said, and it’s been argued against–but it’s true.
…I love video games. Always have.
But I can’t accept calling them art. They are entertainment. They are fun. But what is there to ponder and debate? What comment do they make?
Take your examples. Comparing the universe in Mass Effect to the universe in Star Wars does not make it art. It’s not what makes star wars art. If you wanna call star wars art, call it art for characters and ideas, not the world it put you in.
And Star Craft to Chess!? Chess is a game. Not art.
The visual’s in FFXIII I would compare to a great landscape. A landscape can only be considered art if it is painted/photographed/whatever with a purpose in mind, with meaning behind it. The scenery in FFXIII is just that, scenery. Beautiful, but not art.
High art is created as a commentary on society and the human condition. It should force you to question what you believed was true and evoke deep emotions you did not know you had. Now, you can argue video games do this, and sometimes they do, kind of, but it is lost in the medium. Yes, in…
…Do you remember that huge room at the beginning of Assassin’s Creed 2 full of hundreds of Animii chambers? Brotherhood finally reveals the secret behind that strange warehouse: those beds are used to train Templar Knights as assassins. Basically, Brotherhood gives you a way to enjoy some more Assassin’s Creed without having to hold out for the still far-off AC3, but this will be a very different game than what you might be expecting. Ezio’s still in the game, and you’re still in Rome, but instead of focusing solely on killing targets, building up and improving Rome (like improving your villa in the last game) takes a much more important role. Brotherhood also introduces new multiplayer modes (the focus of our previews so far) for up to eight players. You use the same tricks and tactics as in Assassin’s Creed 2, but the men you have to dispatch now are real people, and there’s a good chance that they’re out to get you as well….
Growing up, in the days before the internet answered all our questions, video game urban legends flew around from kid to kid like a virus. Before there was any real way to verify whether these things were actually true, we had to take the word of our friend who “swears his cousin could do it.”
…For the love of all things holy in this world, there is a Mew in Pokemon Red. I found him myself, and it’s a bit of a tricky method, in which you have to go to Lavender, find the gambler before the tunnel that leads to fuck, the megacity (this is a LONG time ago.) and press start as soon as you walk into his sight range, fly to the Misty’s city, and when you get on the bird to fly, a little exclamation mark will come up and he’ll see you, but you’ll still fly to Misty’s city (but your start menu will no longer work) you have to walk up the passageway leading to that other dude’s house, Gary or Ben I think his name was, straight north from the city core. In the area above there, there are a bunch of trainers if you did the game right, then there will be a trainer that you didn’t face yet you’d have to hug the wall, so he sees you and walks towards you, fights you, and after that your start button will work again. Fly back to Lavender, and as soon as you reach the Route that takes you back to where you…
Which games are the standout hits of this generation? Find out inside…
…This series has alot of variety. Some of the games are like Animal Crossing, but many others are in wildly different genres and settings. At any rate, these games have been EA’s strongest performers on DS, as sports titles, shooters and other traditional fare from Western publishers don’t really work on DS (or PSP for that matter). The series is available for both Wii and DS, and is set to expand to X360 and PS3 with Sky Heroes in the fall - but for now over 10m copies of My Sims have been sold on Wii and DS. The mainline Sims franchise, in the form of The Sims 3 returns to consoles this year so it will be interesting to see how this spin-off franchise of games fares with the big kahuna returning.
As with the top ten, the top twenty new franchises for the generation is quite an ecclectic list. Sales are in millions worldwide, and by ‘new franchise’ using the parameters outlined above….
M2 research published a study today that breaks down gaming demographics among teens. Some interesting factoids include teen girls’ preference for PSP and the staggering statistic that 90 percent of tweens play games online.
…The breakdown of age gaps and gender splits in video game preferences is more interesting. For example, Facebook is really only king for boys when they’re between the ages of 8 and 11 and king for girls only between the ages of 12 and 15. There’s also a “sweet spot” for online gaming that hits both genders right between ages 8 and 11 — the study says 91 percent of tween boys and 93 percent of tween girls play their games online….
