70% of Teen Girls Play PSP Compared to 44% of Teen Boys

M2 research published a study today that breaks down gaming demographics among teens. Some interesting factoids include teen girls’ preference for PSP and the staggering statistic that 90 percent of tweens play games online.

…The breakdown of age gaps and gender splits in video game preferences is more interesting. For example, Facebook is really only king for boys when they’re between the ages of 8 and 11 and king for girls only between the ages of 12 and 15. There’s also a “sweet spot” for online gaming that hits both genders right between ages 8 and 11 — the study says 91 percent of tween boys and 93 percent of tween girls play their games online….

The Science of 3D Gaming

With the help of leading experts in optical science and 3D technology, we examine the present and future of 3D video games, including how it works and what it ultimately means for gamers.

…D behind VR helmets? The presumption that you need a full body suit and giant sensor array to use Virtual Reality technology is a huge misconception. VR Helmets can be used with a regular modern day game controller. With the VR helmet only taking the place of the analog on an controller that is used to look around in video games. It would make video games way more immersive (think turning your head to look around and find your barrings in Halo: Reach rather than turning your character’s entire body). Also getting rid of the Batman “Bat Suit” effect. It seems like a much simpler solution to making video games more immersive without going through such a large expensive hardware change of buying a specialized 3D HDTV and other equipment. When you could retro-fit a VR helmet on current game systems and just keep the TV you have now….

Analysis: Is net neutrality good for gaming?

A group of game developers publicly support the FCC’s push for net neutrality, but what does net neutrality mean for gamers? We break down the jargon on both sides of the debate.

…T and Comcast can succeed in controlling what is “important” and not important or what constitutes as “worthy” to have preference over our hobbies, then they can not only ruin any progress and freedom that we and video games makers have, but more importantly they can charge more money to have “better” internet. You can almost compare it to paying for dial up or cable internet, but the only difference is that you’ll be using the same internet, the same speed of internet yet we’ll all be at the mercy of Fortune 500 companies that are headed by bald headed old men who could care less if you can get zero lag while playing WoW or MW2. SO, urdnotgrunt, you could learn a lot from notexactlyjack because if this crap ends us happening, we’ll all feel the results and they won’t be good….

Good Endings Make Great Games

We’ve all been there. You pour 10-20 hours into a game, master the mechanics, approach the final conflict…

…You want to talk about disappointing endings? Lets Explore Alan Wakes lack luster attempt at a boss fight. I don’t want to say what it is just in case any one reading has not played through it yet but come on really? You have what is pretty much one of the best games i have ever played paired with an ending pretty much equivalent to ODST’s where your left feeling as if this should of just been a mid point in the game. After the ending in odst i honestly had no idea i beat the game until i got the achievement for it. It was also very disappointing in Alan wake after everything you just experienced to have such a weak ending point…

Apple to buy Chinese game developer?

Apple’s admiration for games and their ability to makes us spend more and more time with our iPhones, iPads, and iPods continues with news that the company may be acquiring a large Chinese development studio.

…Why Apple would pick this particular studio is unclear, save for the desire to get into a relatively untapped market with huge potential early. Handseeing’s expertise in Java-based online gaming technologies is apparent, and it enjoys a relationship with Sun Microsystems that resulted in the deployment of Tianya Club, an online community that is now one of the largest social networks in China….

Americans Spend More Time Gaming Online Than Checking Mail

An recent study from The Nielsen Company has shown that Americans have approximately 10 percent more time this year playing online games than last year, pushing the activity past checking email to become the second-most common online activity besides visiting social networks.

…Online gaming was one of only three categories of internet usage to see double digit growth over the last year, as video and movie watching grew 12 percent while social network browsing grew 43 percent year over year. Online gaming was listed as the second-largest consumer of U.S. online usage, taking up 10.2 percent of responder time, ranking far behind the 22.7 percent spent on social networking.
According to Nielsen, over 400 million hours of online gaming are played each month, with social networks and blogs commanding the only higher amount on a monthly basis at 906 hours. Nielsen also studied mobile internet usage, where online gaming failed to notch a significant share of gaming time. Even though gaming-friendly mobile devices like the iPhone are becoming more prominent, the research company doubts it will gain a significant share of time in the category in the near future, as Nielsen analyst Dave Martin stated “While convergence will continue, the unique characteristics of computers and mobiles,…

The Psychology of Fanboyism

In order to understand what motivates “fanboys” and “fangirls,” we investigate the behaviors behind video-game fanaticism with the help of esteemed psychologists, authors, and experts on the subject.

…But what makes fanboys tick? Why do so many take such a militant stance over their video-game console of choice, especially when the differences between consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 are minute when it comes to the average gamer’s concerns? The vast majority of major game releases are multiplatform titles, and they offer essentially the same experience regardless of your console of choice. So why do so many fanboys develop a strong attachment to one game platform while rejecting the other with equal passion? With the help of psychologists and authorities on the subject, we seek to learn what motivates fanboy behavior and why it has become a pejorative term….

Bethesda Not Planning Wii or Motion Control Games

Bethesda is waiting on adding Kinect or Move support to games, and isn’t working on a Wii title, nor are they rushing to add 3D.

…Over the last couple years, TheFeed has written so many stories about development companies leaping into the iPhone game space, or diverting resources from core game development to focus on Wii titles, or shoehorning in motion controls where they don’t fit, that it’s nice to write a story from the opposite point of view.
According to executive producer Todd Howard, Bethesda is waiting on adding Kinect or Move support to games, and isn’t working on a Wii title, nor are they rushing to add 3D. Bethseda is also not making a Facebook game. He didn’t mention it, but I assume Howard is not working on a browser-based, casual MMO either. Instead, they’ll be creating the epic games gamers actually want. Although Howard did mention wanting to make an iPhone game, but the project is on the “back burner”

Industry Gamers asked Howard whether his company is working on any 3D or Kinect titles, and he said:
“No, I sort of take a wait-and-see approach on that. We do a bunch of games, so ‘X’ developer might decide, ‘Hey…

Lord British wins $28 million in NCSoft lawsuit

Game developer Richard “Lord British” Garriott won a $28 million lawsuit against former employer NCSoft today for breach of contract. The Korean-based software company fired him while he was in space.

…At issue in the lawsuit is whether or not NCSoft violated their contract with Garriott about what to do with his stock options in the company if he ever left. The contract said his stock options were supposed to remain in place “in the event of his termination by the company, but would expire within 90 days in the case of his voluntary departure.”…
