San Francisco Threatens to Sue Zynga for Vandalism

It’s all fun and Mafia games until someone pisses off the city attorney, who is going after social-gaming company Zynga — maker of such popular Facebook applications as FarmVille and Mafia Wars — for what it calls an “illegal and actionable” marketing campaign to promote the company’s latest product, Mafia Wars: Las Vegas.

Fantasy Football is Less Geeky than Video Games?

Fantasy Football is geeky as hell.

…t see any difference between a bunch of guys sitting on a couch playing video games and a bunch of guys sitting in a basement pretending to be scouts as if they have any understanding of statistics or even the game itself. To the untrained onlooker, fantasy football and Dungeons and Dragons look very similar in action.
Fantasy football is a game that begins with a draft where players are divvied up amongst the participants in a series of rounds. The goal is to choose players who will then do well during the season by amassing sacks, carries, touchdowns, and countless other feats. As each week of the NFL passes, a leader board depicts who has had the most success thus far. The decision making process is lengthy and intensive because overlooking a single point, such as a propensity for injury, can lead to a long and disappointing season. Does this process/game sound geeky? Hell ya, it does! There is nothing cool about it. That does not mean that it is not fun, because it certainly can be, but it is a geek fest…

The Education and History of Civilization 5

A student of history, a student of Civilization, a student of the Sid Meier way, lead designer Jon Shafer hopes his dissertation, Civilization 5, is the best Civ yet.

…it’s the first military unit in the game, so it’s quite weak. Fortunately, we have a spearman. There are no more stacks in the game, so we can’t stack, but what we can do is take our spearman and bring him up front to make our front lines stronger,” Shafer says as he maneuvers his infantry across the front lines. But because basic military units now move two tiles in combat instead of one, the spearman who just entered the fray can attack, removing one of Washington’s threatening warriors from the map. “If units could only move one unit per turn, then it’s much harder to move guys around,” Shafer says. “More like checkers than chess,” Shirk interjects.
“That change was made for a couple of reasons,” Shafer says. “The big reason is because you have one unit per tile, you want more opportunity to maneuver, more flexibility in your units…to flank, to pursue routed forces of the enemy. We wanted you to be able to do a little bit more.”
