Microsoft shows off new controller, with transforming D-pad

The D-pad on the existing 360 controllers is, to put it mildly, utter garbage. If you want to play any games relying on precise movements, such as fighting games, buying a third-party controller is a requirement. Microsoft hopes it has this problem licked, however, and is releasing a controller with a new, updated D-pad on November 9

If you want to play any games relying on precise movements, such as fighting games, buying a third-party controller is a requirement. Microsoft hopes it has this problem licked, however, and is releasing a controller with a new, updated D-pad on November 9. The catch? You won’t be able to buy the controller…

…of the apps on the app store being junk, I’d agree with you. They should make a trial api so people can run an app once to check it out (for those devs that don’t make a lite version). I buy many apps and more than once I’ve been screwed by apps that crash every 5 seconds and apps that don’t have all the listed features.

A consumer has up to 24 hrs to uninstall the app and get a refund. Does Apple not allow any such trial period? No, I don’t own an iPhone.

The 10 Most Overblown Video Game Controversies

So-called “responsible” adults have always tried to find scapegoats for bad behavior since the dawn of time. These days, video games take the most heat, even though some controversies just aren’t very well thought out.

…Source: Atari

Turning a villain into the hero of a video game was unheard of in the days of the Atari 2600. So when horror movie auteur Charles Band got his bloody hands in the video game market, he caused a bigger stink than your Dad in the bathroom on Thanksgiving.

He turned the classic slasher masterpiece The Texas Chainsaw Massacre into a grind-’em-up game that puts the player behind the human skin mask of Leatherface and lets them chase down innocents with a gear-grinding chainsaw for points. Stores either refused to stock the game or hid it behind the counter where only adults could purchase it.

The concept of the game may have sounded violent, but the rest was far from bloody. Thanks to the limited graphics and extremely crude sounds, Leatherface just looked like a walking Jack-o-Lantern with a hot dog shaped tumor sticking out of his gut. So really, the only people who had a right to be offended by it were people with encephalitis or victims of kielbasa impalement….

The Game Layer on Top of the World (TED)

He mentions DIGG in his talk! By now, we’re used to letting Facebook and Twitter capture our social lives on the web — building a “social layer” on top of the real world. At TEDxBoston, Seth Priebatsch looks at the next layer in progress: the “game layer,” a pervasive net of behavior-steering game dynamics that will reshape education and commerce.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick Loses Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

It is being reported that Activision Blizzard CEO (and perpetual heel of the game industry) Bobby Kotick has lost a $1-million-plus legal battle against his former defense attorney Patricia Glaser in a sexual harassment suit.

…The history of the case goes back several years to a sexual harassment suit from 2007. At the time, Kotick shared ownership of a Gulfstream private jet with Andrew Gordon, the head of Goldman Sachs’ LA investment banking division. A flight attendant, Cynthia Madvig, alleged that the jet’s pilot, Phil Berg, pressured her into joining him for between-flight dinners as his “arm candy.” When she refused, Berg reportedly made it his mission to inflict misery upon Madvig — going as far as forcing her to repeatedly clean the jet’s toilets with the pilot “leering” at her….

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty [Review]

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty brings players back to the sci-fi world they’ve been pining over for more than a decade, and it doesn’t disappoint.

…each time you finish one, there are usually three or four to choose from. In one, I had to defend refugees at night from Zerg swarms and go out during the day to destroy the hives. During my first night there, I found the attacking Zerg were actually infected citizens who became shambling mutations, begging me to kill them. In other missions, you might protect refugees that the Dominion has left for dead, or try to learn more about your enemies and their weapons. On the latter missions, you’ll be looking for Protoss or Zerg-specific items that will help you upgrade your weapons, armor, and more. You might even find yourself search for artifacts for the mysterious Mobius organization, but, beware, the Zerg’s Queen of Blades might be on the hunt as well……
